CBD has a larger scope for medical use than THC
It is favored because it does not make people to “get high”. Now, because of CBD’s medicinal properties and its lack of psychotic effects, cannabis strains with high CBD concentrations are being grown.
CBD has anti-oxidant properties and provides anti-ischemic and neuroprotective effects. Studies have shown that cannabis strains that contain larger amounts of CBD do not result in short-term memory difficulties as opposed to strains containing lesser concentration of CBD but the same concentration of THC.
CBD also provides anti-psychotic effects. This is particularly useful to oppose the psychotomimetic effects (delusion, delirium, etc.) of THC, especially on patients having latent schizophrenia. In fact, studies have shown that CBD works as a safe alternative treatment method for schizophrenia. CBD reduces the symptoms of schizophrenia by stabilizing the pathways of NMDA receptors in the brain. Compared to other anti-psychotic drugs, CBD has significantly lower side effects. In addition, the social isolation caused by THC can be counteracted by CBD and, in addition to having anti-depressant effects, the latter reduces anxiety in those suffering from social anxiety disorder.
Dravet Syndrome, which a rare form of epilepsy that usually manifests in infants (around the age of six months), may also be treated by CBD, though research is still on. In the United States, a liquid that contains CBD has received the status of orphan drug for treatment of Dravet Syndrome.
In addition to the above uses, several articles (peer-reviewed) published in scientific journals also indicate that CBD may be of use for treatment of several other conditions. It has anti-convulsive, anti-spasmodic, and anti-tumoral effects. There have been reports of use of CBD for killing breast cancer. Diseases like diabetes, chronic pain, arthritis, post traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, infections resistant to antibiotics, neurological disorders, among others, can all be controlled and/or treated by using CBD. In fact, cannabidiol can also be used to treat acne and has anti-microbial properties.
However, this is not all. Respiratory disorders like asthma and other disorders involving inflammation and pain can also benefit from this cannabis-based derivative. CBD also has uses in treating heart, liver, and kidney diseases, glaucoma (eye disease), obesity, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia, migraines, and moodiness. Project CBD, which promotes research on medical uses of CBD, will provide a lot more information through access to relevant scientific articles on how cannabidiol helps to treat various diseases. As you can clearly see, CBD has a really wide range of uses for medicinal purposes.
